2.30 Into the Witch’s Lair

July 8, 2011

They ran in secret, through the streets of Strangetown on a bright sunny day. All felt a little silly to be dressed in black, but no one seemed quite sure how to break into a house in broad daylight, so the three stuck with what they knew, or thought they knew, to be best. They ran all the way through town until they reached the agreed upon destination – the corner of the Goth mansion. It towered over them, ominous and oppressive, but still shaded them from the sunlight, and provided some much needed cover.

It was Lazlo who spoke first, after catching his breath. “I know where she is. I say we bust out a window and get up there now.”

“No,” came Maria’s voice, soft but firm. “We stick with the plan.”

A crimson wave flushed through Lazlo’s face, a sure sign he was getting angry, thought Allie.  Lazlo snorted his disgust.  “The plan wasn’t to stand here like a bunch of idiots, waiting to get caught. I’m not going to lose her now, not after so long…”

“Shhhh,” Allie abruptly cut of Lazlo’s rant. “Bella’s coming. Stand perfectly still, like we practiced.”

Not a single breath was exhaled in that next second.  The trio watched as Bella Goth walked out of her house and down the sidewalk, mere yards from where they stood. Then, Allie began to chant very softly, and, after a moment, Maria joined in.

Protect us from her steely gaze,
Protect us from her witchly ways,
Guide us through her evil tower,
Before the nightfall’s darkest hour.

Harm to none; no harm to we three,
As we are, so mote it be.

The two DiPotere women continued their breathless chant, as Lazlo watched in wonder. The three, barely concealed by the shadow of the Goth mansion, remained undetected as Bella Goth walked down the sidewalk for her daily journey to work. BellTech Labs, thought Lazlo, where this all began. He remembered the first day he’d laid eyes on Isadora DiPotere, so many years ago now. Back then, he lived his life in blissful ignorance of the true strangeness of Strangetown, as did all his fellow townies. Now, now he was here, getting ready to break into the Goth mansion…”

“Come on!” Allie was screaming. Lazlo looked up, startled out of his reverie, and found the two women bounding up the stairs to the front door without him. Mentally slapping himself on the head for losing focus, Lazlo rushed to catch up. The mansion was an imposing, colossal structure of stone, metal and glass. It certainly never looked like it belonged in Strangetown, thought Lazlo, but yet no one ever questioned it. No one ever questioned anything Bella did. Shaking his head, Lazlo entered the mansion right behind the two DiPotere women.

Maria was lightning fast, determined to get in and out without Bella being any the wiser.  She knew the layout of the Goth mansion as well as she knew the layout of her own home.  The rooms, the floors, the stairs…all were imprinted on her brain forever.  Maria pushed aside old thoughts, memories of what she had done, and what Bella had done to her.  These rancid thoughts won’t serve me now, she thought.  Maria raced through through the mansion to the circular stairwell and began her climb.

“The tower,” said Lazlo, still a few steps behind.

“Yes,” panted Maria.  “This will get you up to the cells, but then I’ll have to leave you. ”  Maria paused to catch her breath.  “To find the keys.”

Up and up, they climbed. The walls seemed to spin as the trio raced up and around the circular staircase to the very top of the tower. Finally, Maria slowed. She pushed open a heavy wooden door. The air that flowed out felt warm and smelled stagnant. Maria knew no one was allowed up here except for Bella. She pushed aside her fears of what they would find and ran through the doorway. Allie was right on her tail as Maria entered the hall of stone and metal gates.

This is it, thought Lazlo, still a few feet behind, walking now. My Isadora, my Isadora is here with my baby girl.

It seemed a million miles to walk the hallway. Maria and Allie were conferring in the corner, giving him a moment of privacy, in realized. He walked through, peering into the cell doors. In the first cell was an old man, battered and worn, who looked like he was ready to take his last breath at any moment. It was in the next cell that he found her. She looked the same. Her hair was limp, her dress torn, yes, but after all these years, she still looked the same. Finally, Lazlo broke down in a rush of tears.

“Isadora!” he called. “Isadora, my love! I”m here, I’ve come for you.” Isadora had watched the two women run through the hall, she had felt the energy of their presence from the moment the door opened.  These were powerful women, she was thinking, as her one true love appeared at her prison door.

I soooo can’t wait to see what happens next! The old man… is the father of the one girl, right? The husband Bella seduced away while trying to worm her way into the family? (I can’t believe I remember all this!)
