2.23 Conversations in the Dark, Part I

December 10, 2010

Allie felt her pulse quicken. Proof? Lazlo said he had proof. If he did, that would mean she would be one step closer to finding the truth about her own family’s curse. She was starting to wonder though, if Lazlo wasn’t just a little bit crazy. He’d admitted to her that he’d gone out of his mind when Isadora and his daughter vanished. And who wouldn’t? Maybe, though, he didn’t recover from the loss as well as he thought he did. And even that was assuming he was right about the slowed down time cycle of Strangetown – the Strangetown Continuum he’d called it. Allie’d been so wrapped up in trying to understand the logistics of Lazlo’s relationship with her great-cousin Isadora, she hadn’t stopped to think about this new idea. Time moving slower? It didn’t seem to move slower for her family, and certainly hadn’t for Miss Emmy.

“What kind of proof?” asked Allie.

“I see the doubt in your eyes,” said Lazlo, “but I see the hope as well. I know this sounds far fetched, but is it crazier to believe that they are alive than it is to believe they vanished into thin air? No.  Isadora is alive, and I can only hope that means my daughter is alive as well, but I understand you will want to see it for your own eyes. Come to my house tomorrow night after work, and hopefully you can see the evidence for yourself.  It’s late now, and we should go.”

Allie and Lazlo stood to go. She understood now, her attraction for Lazlo. He was handsome, yes, but there was something deeper, a kinship with her family, an understanding that went back many years. He’d known who she was all along, and hadn’t said anything. Did that mean she could trust him, or was it the opposite?  She wanted to trust him, wanted so desperately to have a friend to talk to about all this, but now it seemed her own journey had gotten more complicated.  Isadora and little Bella Donna alive?  Could it be true?

Before Allie could finish her thought, Lazlo pulled her in tight for a close hug. “You don’t know what it means to have a friend to talk to about all this. It’s been so long, and such a lonely road. Thank you for helping me get Isadora back.”

Allie had been enjoying the hug. Sorry Isadora, she thought, he has such strong arms. “Wait, what?” she said. “Get her back?”

“Well, of course,” said Lazlo, “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

The DiPoteres don’t seem to be too lucky in love, do they? Except Bianca, who hit the jackpoy with Joel.
