The next evening at the Seeker Cafe, Allie prepared to tell Lazlo everything.  The two had circled around each other all night, giving quick glances before turning away.  Underneath all the tension, Allie still wasn’t sure this was the right thing to do.  Could she, should she, tell an outsider of her family’s curse?  What would the consequences be?  Ultimately, though, Allie felt in her heart that her connection to Lazlo was important.  Besides, she reasoned, Lazlo (gorgeous, hunky, smells-good-all-the-time Lazlo), was connected to the curse already.  She knew that by his presence at Miss Emmy’s memorial service.  There’s just so much to explain, she thought, how will I ever begin?

When the last customer had finally walked out the door, Allie tried to begin.  “Lazlo, I…”

“Not now,” said Lazlo, and Allie sighed.  “I’m not backing out,” he continued.  “Let’s just finish in here first.  I don’t want to have this discussion while I’m washing dishes.”

“Fair enough,” said Allie.

Allie went about her closing routine, wiping down tables and booths, sweeping and mopping the floor, while Lazlo finished the dishes and closed out the register. He finished well before Allie, and this night, unlike other nights before, he slipped out the back door instead of helping her with the rest of her tasks. Normally, this would have irritated Allie, but she was too wrapped up in her thoughts to worry about something so trivial. When her work was finally done, she wandered out back herself, and found Lazlo sitting at the employee break table, looking out over the landscape of Strangetown.

“Sit down, Allie,” he said, and Allie did. The two sat for a while, looking out at the clear night sky over Strangetown. The restaurant had a spectacular view of the town, being situated up on the hill as it was. Allie figured the view from the Curious house rooftop telescope must be just out of this world. She was trying to picture it when a small cough from Lazlo brought her back to reality.

“I don’t really know where to begin,” she said, finally. “There’s just so much…and it’s so complicated, you know? And it’s not just me and my family, this curse goes back years, decades. It’s been a plague on the DiPotere women for so long, that no one is even sure how long anymore. I was so surprised to see you at Miss Emmy’s memorial. Surprised, but relieved in a way too, because now there’s someone outside of family I can talk to about it, not that anyone in my family has anything to say about the curse anymore. Mom just pretends it doesn’t exist, and Phebe and Caprice didn’t know anything until yesterday. I’d like to talk to Maria, but her life was just so shattered by the curse, it’s hard to bring it up, and…”

“Um, Allie?” Lazlo cut in.

Allie blinked and looked at her boss, who sat across from her with the strangest look on his face.

“Oh, God, I’m rambling,” said Allie. “There’s just so much to explain.”

“Maybe I should start then,” said Lazlo.

“You?” she asked. Allie had been so wrapped up in the events of the last few days to think anything of him, or what his part in the curse might be. She hadn’t thought of this, that Lazlo might have a story of his own to tell.

“When your cousin came to Strangetown, she was searching for something,” Lazlo began. “Well, I guess she would have been your great cousin, or maybe great-great cousin, but anyway, when Eliza came here she was looking for her own cousin Isadora, who’d been incommunicado for three months.”

“Yes,” said Allie. “I know the story, but I’m surprised you know it so well.”

“Oh, I know it very well,” Lazlo replied. “Eliza came here from Sim City looking for Isadora, and when Eliza arrived, she found nothing. There was no trace of Isadora, or her home, or Isadora’s daughter Bella Donna.”

“Right, nothing was ever found, not even a scrap of clothing. But how is it you know all this?” asked Allie.

“Well,” said Lazlo, with a pained look in his eyes Allie had never seen before, “Bella Donna was my daughter, too.”

    That’s quite a surprise.
So Lazlo is what….about as old as Miss Emmy was?
I love the last few chapters of this story. (My internet has been loopy so I just got to reading them today). Can’t wait to see what Red decides.
