2.14 – A Founder’s Birthday

September 17, 2010

Life was good in the DiPotere household.  Allie was enjoying her job waitressing at the Seeker Cafe and all the wacky people she was meeting.  She especially enjoyed the view of her yummy boss, Lazlo Curious. She knew she couldn’t stay a waitress forever, but the pay was decent, she liked her co-workers, and most of all, she knew she would never be able to find another job where she could see Lazlo nearly every day.

The girls, Phebe and Caprice, were getting used to having their big sister home again. Phebe in particular liked having Allie around for girl-talk. It was nice having someone closer to her age, someone who could understand the stresses of being a teenager. Allie liked their little talks too, so much that she didn’t feel the need to let Phebe know she had never really had a normal childhood, what with the whole possessed-by-an-evil-family-curse thing. She definitely left out the part about trying to kill their mother. Allie had been home for weeks now, with no strange feelings or urges, and absolutely no voices lingering in the back of her head. The only thing that left Allie bothered, unsettled, was the nagging feeling that something in Strangetown was pulling her in, beckoning her to come within the folds…

but no. It was just being home, that was all. It was good to be home.

The household was also enjoying a bit more spending money, thanks to Joel’s recent promotion to Business Tycoon. He got to ride to work everyday in the office helicopter, and occasionally had the pilot take the girls to school as well. He knew retirement was looming overhead, someday, but he hoped someday was far away. Joel liked working, being busy, and especially being the family’s breadwinner. Living in a house filled with powerful women wasn’t always easy, and finally Joel felt like he’d found a way to contribute.

The girls were growing every day. The two, who had always seemed so alike in looks and temperament, were coming into their own personalities. Phebe was more social, but also more studious, while Caprice had developed an artistic side. In fact, Caprice had decided to stay in public school, and focus on her art, instead of joining Phebe at the more exclusive private school where she would have more studying to do.  Caprice was in awe of Allie’s artistic skill, and hoped someday to be half as good.

Caprice couldn’t understand why, when her mother explained that Allie had painted daily throughout her childhood, that her mother’s voice was tinged with sadness. She watched, though, as Allie’s nimble fingers glided over the canvas for a painting she was doing of their mother, and dreamed of the day she, too, could have the confidence to paint someone’s portrait.

The portrait was to be a birthday present, for the whole family was busy planning Bianca’s party. This was a milestone birthday, the day she was to officially be announced as an elder. The whole family – Joel, the girls, Allie, plus Maria and her fiance Red, and of course Miss Emmy – were going to be there for the occasion. Between Allie’s homecoming and Joel’s promotion, as well as Bianca’s birthday plans, the house was abuzz with happy energy. There was a tinge of worry to all this excitement, though. Everyone couldn’t help but notice how frail Miss Emmy was growing. She still had all her vibrancy, and everyone agreed she looked incredible for someone whose age was past all calculation, but she was growing thinner, and her eyes were cast with shadow. Miss Emmy smiled and waved off any talk of concern for her health, and the household went on with it’s planning.

The big night went off without a hitch. Every one of Bianca’s family and friends turned out to watch her take her spin into Elderhood. Joel, of course, was the first of many toasts that night.

“To my beautiful, amazing wife,” he began, “who is stronger and braver than anyone I know, and whom I love with all my heart. You are more beautiful than when I first saw you climbing out of the Strangetown pool on that wonderful day years ago. To many more birthdays, my love.”

It was no surprise, too, that Joel found a quiet moment in the party to get his beautiful wife alone to present her with the gift he had painstakingly saved for. He had been looking for this birthday gift for two years, and the moment he saw it in the small Strangetown jewelry shop, he knew it was the perfect gift.

Bianca had always loved gifts. Joel watched with a glimmer in his eye as his wife admired the packaging, and slowly slid her fingers beneath the paper. The large box revealed a smaller box, and a smaller box yet inside that until she got to the last box – a slim rectangular one. She allowed Joel to slide open the case, and her mouth fell open in amazement at the gleaming watch which lay nestled against the dark blue velvet lining. Her fingers grazed the thin white gold band, and lightly skimmed the ring of emeralds and diamonds which encrusted the face – a face which bore the Rolex mark.

“You didn’t,” she said, her eyes wide as she searched her husband’s face. He simply smiled that same goofy grin she’d fallen in love with.

“I did,” he said, as he took the watch gently from it’s box and wrapped it around Bianca’s wrist. “This is, like you, as delicate as a flower, and as bright as the sun.”

Bianca gave him a quizzical look before she broke out into peals of laughter. “The shop lady told you to say that, didn’t she?”

Joel blushed and his grin got even bigger. “Maybe she did, birthday girl. Maybe she did.”
